11.2 million % inflation! How is Zimbabwe surviving

Zimbabwe's inflation rate has just touched a stratospheric level of 11.2 million per cent! Yes, 11.2 million per cent, the highest in the world's history!

Compare that to the rate of inflation in India -- which is hovering at the 12 per cent level and causing so much turmoil for Indians as the cost of commodities rises sharply -- and perhaps you can put things in proper perspective.

And while the world and its brother-in-law shed tears as the United States slips into a recession and major stock markets across the world plummet, spare a thought for Zimbabwe where money has no value, and hunger, poverty and death are constant companions.

Hi, I live in Botswana, a country just below Zimbabwe sharing borders with Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and ofcourse South Africa. The Zimbabwe now and Zimbabwean people are 2 different things. Zimbabwe is a disaster due to known truth of the ruler's horrible policies, but the Zimbabwean is an inspiration to everyone. He is torture, traumatised and thrown everywhere, but they still try to get whatever job possible (they are highly skilled and Zimbabwe was a country which as beautiful and prosperous as South Africa, with very fertile land and skilled people) and its so sad. Am a director of an IT Company here, and i recruited a Zimbabwean for a low level technician job. He never mentioned his background and only later i came to know, he was a boss of a company similar to mine in Zim. Sad.. like that many nicely lived people have lost their farms to corrupt govt. As we are speaking, there is a power sharing deal signed (dont know why these rediff guys never mentioned about it) between the newly elected leader Morgan Tsvangirai and The dictator Rober Mugabe. But, lots of western aid, and african countries support only can bring them back. But, they will bounce back, because their people are their strength.
